Markestad
We are uncertain just when this farm was settled, however
Frøholm believes that the -stad ending suggests that Markstad
falls into the same time period as the other Etnedal farms
settled between 1050 and 1350.
After the Black Death Markestad lay empty until the 1660s.
In the Matrikuleringa of 1667 Markestad was krongods.
Svein Rassmusson was living here early on. Søren Hanson Lemmich,
the postmaster from Drammen, also had possession of the farm
at the end of the 16th century. It is not known whether he
purchased the farm directly from the king or whether other
owners preceded him. Gudbrand Olsson Esbjug from Nordre Land
bought Markestad from Lemmich in 1699.
Markestad is situated in the southern part of Etnedal, between
the farm Madslangrud in Etnedal and Leirskogen in Sør Aurdal.
