The Book Project: Rooted in Etnedal

Rooted in Etnedal represents the first published genealogy for the Etnedal kommune since Harald Hvattum's Gård og Bygd i Etnedal, published in 1990.

With Etnedal native Per Odd Smelhus as the main author, Rooted in Etnedal promises to be a favorite tool for all the Valdres researchers. It picks up where Gård og Bygd i Etnedal leaves off: emphasizing the Etnedal immigrants that came to the New World seeking their fortune.

Although the official start date for the book project was January 1, 2007 preparations for the project got underway in August 2005 when Darin Flansburg, under the guidance of Annlaug Klevgård and Per Odd Smelhus, started entering information from Gård og Bygd i Etnedal into a database. Adding to this already extensive wealth of information is years of additional information obtained by Annlaug Klevgård, Per Odd Smelhus and Marisa Benson. It is the hope of the authors that this book will be completed by January 2011.

The Authors

Per Odd Smelhus - Though currently living in Oslo, Per Odd is a true Etnedøl. He could easily be Etnedal's ambassador to America, having helped countless Americans find their Etnedal roots and serving as their personal guide when they visit Norway. He is considered to be the leading authority of Etnedøler living abroad; Rooted In Etnedal is his brainchild.

Darin Flansburg - Somewhat new to Norwegian genealogy, Darin started researching his family tree at the age of twelve. After Annlaug and Per introduced him to his Etnedal roots Darin's interest turned in that direction and Etnedal has become his obsession. Darin's greatest attribute is his ability to drive the project.

Marisa Benson - The newest member to the team, Marisa is a great asset. She is extremely knowledgeable on the Etnedal families and has done extensive research on her own Etnedal roots. What makes Marisa's research so valuable is the way she adds detail the the ancestor's life. As a technology expert she will be instrumental in driving this project forward.

The Cost

The book will be released in electronic format, resulting in no overhead cost for the authors. That means the cost savings of the book will be passed on to the public. As long as Rooted in Etnedal is downloaded from the internet and not changed in any way, the cost of the book is free. If you would like the book on CD you will be charged a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

Submitting Information

If you would like to submit information for use in the book, please send your information and/or pictures to Per Odd Smelhus or Marisa Benson. We will then add you to the acknowledgement page.
